June 30th marks the 20th anniversary of the provocative pop-culture
classic, Do The Right Thing. The film that brought Spike Lee to the
forefront as a film maker, writer and director.
The 1989 film depicted underlying racial tensions within a
community, based in Bed-Stuy,Brooklyn.
Not only the hottest day in the summer, but the story unfolded
the heat in layers of the unspoken thought processes within a
neighborhood where many cultures harbored and tensions were
waiting to peak.
Nominated for two Oscars and a Golden Globe, the film resurfaced
some truths to race relations in America as a whole. The all star
cast included,Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Danny Aiello,
Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturo and Rosie Perez.
Spike’s colorful visionary was well balanced, funny and fresh.
It spoke what many film makers at the time wouldn’t push
towards making his star shine brighter.
Loved the film and glad it could make a bold statement
for a new generation of film makers.
